And She Prayed

A face and a name keep "randomly" tip-toeing through her thoughts.

She prays for protection.

A text arrives with a frightful and unfavorable lab test report.

She prays for healing.

A lady on the aisle filled with cans of beans and tomatoes shares how difficult this week has been.

She prays for strength.

A mostly grown child calls with anxiety and frustration pulsating in every word.

She prays for peace.

A brother accepts a weighty responsibility and he's ready except he's nervous.

She prays for courage.

A friend seems discouraged as accounts run hollow and ends refuse to meet.

She prays for provision.

The manager seems misguided, the minister mistaken, the momma fairly miserable.

She prays for redemption.

I wish I was the "she" in every case. I am grateful to my core for every "she" who prays for me and mine, and I am working hard [read: running hard and resting hard] to be in better shape about this. To rise and step in and kneel and approach and petition and battle and believe for others. Oh, for grace.

And she prayed.

Happy Thanks

A Meditation on Matthew 5:3-10.

Happiness is knowing where we stand, realizing every ounce of goodness is a gift, and intentionally aiming to live emptied; giving thanks for the fulfillment that is ours.

Happiness is knowing we're never alone, feeling separation and sorrow cut deep, but sensing bonds of hope and joy; giving thanks for the communion that is ours.

Happiness is knowing it's fine to be last and there's no need to be loud; giving thanks for the identity and inheritance that is ours.

Happiness is knowing the pangs of purified desires and the diligence of pursuit; giving thanks for the satisfaction that is ours.

Happiness is knowing that life isn't fair, and relinquishing our right to get even; giving thanks for the mercy that is ours.

Happiness is a clean conscience and a humble heart; giving thanks for the holy perspective that is ours.

Happiness is treating others with patience and respect; giving thanks for the royalty that is ours.

Happiness is standing firmly in the light; giving thanks for the future that is ours.

Threshold Blessing

Father, thank you for today. Only you can see all the many choices that have brought us to this point, and only you can see the future blessings that will emerge because of your presence here with us today.

Through the indwelling presence of your holy spirit, you show your kindness by supernaturally infusing temporal things with meaning, purpose and memories.

We thank you.
We confess our dependence upon you.
Jesus, be near.

May every spoken word, every shared seat at the table; every gift of thanks (both hard and happy) that is offered in this place bring honor to your name.

Let us become more aware of your presence. Let us experience the glory of your goodness.

When At First

You know that person you try to avoid? In the name of peace, of course, you steer clear. The one who makes you uneasy, who makes life not easy? Maybe they are careless or cruel, or just unbearable.

I wonder if you could close your eyes and thank God for them.

This is not easy.
But can you breathe in and thank the Creator - who gives you both breath - for His image they bear just by being here?

Can you thank Him for being available to them the way He is available to you?

Can you exhale and linger in the whispered truth that God made both of you, and He has a plan for each of you, and He loves you both?

Are you able to see God's kindness in it all?

Can you ask Him to give you gratitude for this person - a real supernatural thankfulness, the likes of which you cannot acquire on your own?

We can believe God and watch while gratitude affects our attitude and His love has room to work ... putting away fear and miraculously making up for a mess of sin.

Thank You, God, for ________________.

Confessional

God, you are good. Your love cannot fail and your compassion never runs out.
You are holy and righteous and perfect.

Because You are so good, it feels like I shouldn’t be able to talk to You so freely. But because You are so good, I also feel that I can, and I must.

O God, have mercy on me.
It is against You and You alone that I’ve sinned. I’ve been sinful my whole life, and I can’t seem to make much progress without falling short again.

For all the wrong things I’ve done, and all the right things I’ve left undone. Forgive me. The ways I’ve wandered from your way, the times I’ve tested my own version of truth, and the life I’ve spent worshipping what I loathe.

You know every heart-breaking detail.
This is why we come to You. Because without you there is no hope.

Our hearts are so messy – cluttered with fear-based restraints, filled with a fog of selfish desires, and oh, Dear Lord, the noise: all that sinful chatter that stirs up strife and puffs up pride. This internal chaos leads nowhere but to more sin and death.

We acknowledge our sin, God.
We ask you to forgive us.
Please clean our hearts up, straighten things out, and refresh us for good. Renew Your spirit in each of us right here in this moment. Restore the joy of our salvation.

Give us courage to repeat these rhythms of repentance so that You might teach us wisdom in the secret spaces of our souls. May the joy of knowing You and the peace of being known by You permeate our thoughts and words and actions.

You are so good. We don’t deserve Your mercy; we could never earn it; and yet, You are good to all of us.

Hear our confession, Lord.
May You be glorified.

Prayer for Families

Faithful Father, thank You for Your love that cannot fail.

With divine wisdom, You have carefully established the importance of family and belonging – themes of heritage, tribes, generations, and lineages drive Your story of sacrifice and promise.

And with divine grace, You have radically expanded the opportunities for family and belonging – themes of courage, commitment, adoption, and freedom blaze a trail through Your story toward a place where promises are sure, and sacrifice is an abundant way of life.

For those of us who happily know the safety, identity, and joy that are birthed in a family who is marked by Your presence, we thank You. We praise You for Your good gifts.

For those of us who have had to venture out, and move beyond our beginnings to know unconditional love and security, we thank You for never leaving us. We praise You for Your loving presence, and for the supreme sense of family made possible by Your Son, our Brother and Friend, Jesus.

We commit to seek Your face and to seek You first because Your grace is more than enough.

Over every home represented here, we ask Your blessing. For every marriage, for all kinship and friendship, and for every soul in need of acceptance and belonging, we ask that You fill us with Your Spirit and hold us fast.

Turn and shine toward us, Lord.
Hear our prayers, and give us peace. Amen.

Rest Assured

Here are some of the texts from friends I'm praying with and for.
* he was admitted to hospital
* i got the job!
* he is responding to medicines!
* our marriage is healing
* i didn't get the job.
* hospice has called the family in

As my inbox and my thoughts are forced to hold all sorts of sorrow and gladness crammed in the same space, my heart clings to hope. Not hope in an outcome, but hope in the One who comes near when we call out for Him.

God is so good and kind, and He loves us. But He moves in mysterious ways.

I believe He is working to heal and provide, regardless of what we can see, because that is who He is. He faithfully walks with us as we walk by faith in Him.

I text one person "Praise the Lord! He is able!" because things are looking up. And within minutes, I text another person, "We can trust Him! He is able." because from this pit of heartache, all we can do is look up.

We pray for answers, but rest assured, communing moment by moment with our mighty and merciful God IS the answer.
It is our only hope.

"Yet I will rejoice in the Lord. I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign Lord is my strength."
Habakkuk 3:18

"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you . . . and the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast."
1 Peter 5:7,10

Rest assured. 🙏

A 3-Minute Prayer for Leadership Based on James 3:13-18

Dear Lord, thank You for the divine wisdom and understanding You have generously given those who have earnestly asked for it. Thank You for the people in our community who reflect Your goodness in their attitudes and actions.

Help us be humble doers of Your Word and not puffed-up hearers. Help us identify wisdom in humility – as You do. Forgive us for thinking of ourselves first, for letting our preferences guide our decisions, for acknowledging what might be personally gained and then allowing these sinful perspectives to motivate us.

When we feel tempted to assert our desires, please quiet our thoughts and give us pause. When we selfishly want what others have, please help us remember all that You are and all that You have done.

Help us not settle for human initiative and keen ideas that come from walking by sight. Give us a distaste and dissatisfaction for endeavors with even a hint of prideful motivation. Only You can purify our hearts and minds. Give us grace to wholly commit our wants and ways to You.

Father, give us a hunger for unity and an affection toward harmony. Make us attentive to the needs of others as you cultivate Your love in us and develop our ability to fully think a matter through.

Jesus, as we make Your Kingdom and Glory our highest aim, help us intentionally aim to make less and less of ourselves. Spirit, fill us with loving-kindness - evidence of Your consistent leadership. Holy God, give us open-minded objectivity and heartfelt compassion as we make our plans and chart our paths.

In the capacities where You’ve assigned us to follow . . .

We confess that without Your help, our choices only lead toward confusion and chaos. We commit to do the work to diligently dig deep and patiently plant seeds of truth in the lives of those around us. We depend on Your Word to light our way as we venture to encourage others with trust and hope. We pledge to do our best to keep in step with Your Spirit, believing You are the source for all protection and peace.

In the areas where You’ve entrusted us to lead . .

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness. James 3:13-18

A Call to Prayer

When I pray, I really do want God to hear me and move; but mostly, I would love to have answers. I want rescue and provision and healing … clear resolution that fits my timeframe. If we’re being completely honest, I would love to have a color-coded spreadsheet of approved/denied requests delivered to my email, but that hasn’t happened.

Our God is the Ancient of Days, who holds tomorrow, and yet He refers to Himself in the present tense. The Great I AM invites us to join Him in the “now”. Step by step, with every breath, in each moment, we can commune with the Holy One who holds us all together as the pieces of His redemptive plan fall into place.

Let's compare two prayers from the Old Testament: the  prayer of David in Psalm 18 and the prayer of Habakkuk nearly 400 years later. Both men's prayers indicate an intimate reverence for the Lord, and an unshakable belief that God is faithful. Each man has prayed fervently to the Lord for relief. David is dramatically rescued and delivered, but Habakkuk remains in danger of ruin. Despite the earthly turn of events, each man prays to God sincerely and faithfully with thanksgiving.

Listen to David’s triumphant praise:

For who is God, but the LORD?

And who is a rock, except our God?—

He made my feet like the feet of a deer,

And set me secure on the heights.

Habakkuk, grieving the utter destruction of Jerusalem, describes the devastation. With no figs, no fruit, no food, and no flocks, and no end in sight, he says:

AND YET … I will take joy in the God of my salvation.

GOD, the Lord, is my strength;

He makes my feet like the deer’s;

He makes me tread on my high places.

David’s songs of earthly victory give language for Habakkuk’s praise as he struggles toward eternal victory. BOTH men recognize a mighty God, and rejoice that He is at work in their lives, calling them to, and equipping them for higher places.

It is to the heights of communion that the Lord calls us. Whether we sense that God is settling us securely in the heights, or making us to tread our high places, He has promised never to leave, and His love cannot fail. Regardless of shifting circumstances, and no matter the earthly outcome, we keep praying for answers, knowing full well that praying really IS the answer.

Praying is a lot like breathing. It provides the sustaining rhythms of dependency for life. We inhale with belief and hope that is based on faith, and then exhale with surrender that requires faith as well. Over and over again.  Inhale, exhale.  Inspire, expire. With every prayer breathed, we die a little more to ourselves and almost immediately receive fresh inspiration.

As a little girl I suffered from severe asthma. During an attack, I could breathe in as deeply as I wanted, but I couldn’t fully exhale. With every gasp, my lungs would flood again, and I found less and less relief. The weight of that impurity and imbalance made me weary and weak.

Last fall when I had Covid, at first it felt familiar like asthma. But later, it was different - my breathing became labored. I couldn’t fully inhale without triggering a sudden fit of coughing, so I settled for shallow breaths and deep exhales which made me weak and weary.

I’ll admit that sometimes my prayer life becomes asthmatic … I billow in deep and hope-filled beliefs, but I simply lack the ability to fully surrender. In other seasons, my prayers fall frail … I take in thin amounts of truthful hope while draining out a swell of surrender that feels more like defeat.

With the Lord’s help, our prayers can thrive - not too burdened, nor too shallow; but balanced by present peace. There is peace in the presence of a God who knows us and hears us and loves us. The joy of loving Him gives us nimble strength as He makes our feet like the deer.  And so, we “Rejoice always, [we] pray without ceasing, [and we] give thanks in all circumstances;” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

Lord, thank you for the unique perspective each one of us brings to Your table and to Your work. Thank you for the circumstances and challenges that you’ve allowed to inform our faith and shape us into more of Your likeness. As we seek You first, and call on You for guidance, protection and provision, teach us to pray in healthy, continuous rhythms of Your goodness and Your grace.  Amen.

No Pomp Nor Circumstance

A meditation on

Romans 8:38-39

as pages turn in God's unfolding story

For I am convinced

I have pondered these things, and I stand resolved (on humbled knees)

I believe

that neither death

all the scary things that could possibly happen but haven't yet

nor life,

all the experiences and interactions that happen every moment

neither angels nor demons,

all the good and evil intentions hidden in plain sight

neither the present

these people and priorities we currently choose

nor the future,

these decisions and dreams we currently pursue

nor any powers,

anything or anyone that has influence over these choices and pursuits

neither height

the thrilling victories and soaring accomplishments

the thriving relationships and simple pleasures

nor depth,

the gut-punches of failure and moments of defeat

the hurtful betrayals, the stubborn silence, and the humility of seeking forgiveness

nor anything else in all creation,

all the things I shudder to consider

all the ways the world is fallen

all the folks who come and go

all the freedoms offered you by the Creator

none of it

will be able to separate us from the love of God

It is impossible to sever or interrupt or alter the free-flowing, life-giving grace

that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

the One who is making this impossibility a reality,

the One and only - who deserves our attention, allegiance, and affection.

Choose Him. Follow Him.

This is Love. This is Life.

This is my constant prayer.

Transformers

Finally, friends,

whatever is true,
I am falling short, but God made me and loves me and hasn't given up on me.

whatever is honorable,
God chose to send His Spirit to live in MY body.

whatever is just,
When I misuse food and neglect my body, there are natural consequences.

whatever is pure,
God designed my body to work hard and be nourished by food.

whatever is lovely,
My identity is in Christ. My soul will always be more important than this body that is wasting away.

Abba, Father,” he said,

“everything is possible for you.

Take this cup from me.

Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
Mark 14:36

What a great model for prayer! Jesus, on the eve of his crucifixion, prays to God the Father.

He affectionately relies on relationship.
“Abba, Father,” he said,
